DownloadTime answers a narrow mathematical question: how long would a stated number of bits take at a stated sustained number of bits per second? The answer is exact for those inputs. A real download is a different observation because its rate can change from moment to moment and may be limited anywhere between the remote server and local storage. The calculator deliberately avoids a hidden overhead percentage. Such a percentage could look realistic while still being wrong for the server, route, wireless link, device, and time involved.
The result assumes one sustained rate
If the entered rate is 100 Mbit/s, the formula assumes that 100,000,000 useful bits are transferred every second for the entire duration. It does not insert pauses, retransmissions, changing congestion, or a ramp-up period. That makes the result a transparent baseline: 100 GB at 100 Mbit/s is exactly 8,000 theoretical seconds. The baseline is useful for checking units and comparing entered rates, but it does not say the network will hold that rate. Describe it as ideal line-rate duration, and keep the entered sustained rate visible beside the answer.
The slowest changing stage can set the observed rate
An advertised access speed is only one part of the path. The source may send more slowly, other traffic may share a link, Wi-Fi conditions may vary, protocol work may consume capacity, and local storage or security scanning may delay visible progress. These factors do not have one universal percentage and may change during the same transfer. DownloadTime neither measures nor predicts them. If you have a reliable sustained rate observed for the relevant source and device, you may enter that rate as a scenario, but the source and observation remain your responsibility.
Use scenarios instead of a false guarantee
For planning, calculate more than one explicitly labelled scenario: for example, the advertised rate and a lower sustained rate you have reason to consider. Compare the durations without calling either one a promised finish time. Do not add a clock reading from the device, because the calculator does not know whether a transfer will start immediately, remain uninterrupted, or cross a change in conditions. The useful output is a duration tied to a stated rate. Actual progress should be read from the transfer application once the download is running.
