Download time formula

How to calculate download time

Time (seconds) = file size (bits) ÷ sustained rate (bits/s).

For decimal units: seconds = GB × 8000 ÷ Mbit/s.

100 GB at 100 Mbit/s: 100 × 8000 ÷ 100 = 8000 seconds = 2 h 13 min 20 s.

100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s because 1 byte = 8 bits. GB is decimal; GiB is binary, so select the symbol actually shown by the file source.

The result is an ideal transfer time at a sustained rate. Server limits, protocol overhead, Wi-Fi, congestion, storage, decompression, and installation can make the real elapsed time longer.
